A surface porosity approach for eliminating artificial ponding in coastal salt marsh simulations

چکیده
Hydrodynamic processes over marsh topography are significantly affected by surface defects such as cuts and rills on channel berms platforms. These meter-scale features often missing in the model representation due to spatial resolution available from data sources, well incomplete grid itself. To minimize artificial hydraulic isolation numerical models, we propose implementing an effective porosity algorithm considering fine-scale depressions that control drainage process. The modification is carried out eliminate ponding effects observed simulations Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge, DE, USA using original FVCOM code. Results revised models compared with pressure gauge collected isolated depression platform. new implementations for proper wetting drying efficient accurate hydrodynamic modeling inside a complex salt-marsh system, which constitutes major breakthrough context of increasing need better understanding physical morphological changes valuable coastal ecosystems.

Phylogenetic diversity of Archaea in sediment samples from a coastal salt marsh.
The Archaea present in salt marsh sediment samples from a tidal creek and from an adjacent area of vegetative marshland, both of which showed active methanogenesis and sulfate reduction, were sampled by using 16S rRNA gene libraries created with Archaea-specific primers. None of the sequences were the same as reference sequences from cultured taxa, although some were closely related to sequence...
متن کاملSalt Marsh Tidal Channels
Salt marsh tidal channels are highly sinuous. For this project, field surveys and aerial photographs were used to characterize the planform of tidal channels at China Camp Marsh in the San Francisco Bay, California. To model the planform evolution, we assume that the topographic curvature of the channel centreline is a key element driving meander migration. Extraction of curvature data from a p...
متن کاملMicrobial Community Analysis of a Coastal Salt Marsh Affected by the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill
Coastal salt marshes are highly sensitive wetland ecosystems that can sustain long-term impacts from anthropogenic events such as oil spills. In this study, we examined the microbial communities of a Gulf of Mexico coastal salt marsh during and after the influx of petroleum hydrocarbons following the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. Total hydrocarbon concentrations in salt marsh sediments were high...
متن کاملCarbon isotope ratios of methyl bromide and methyl chloride emitted from a coastal salt marsh
[1] Methyl bromide (CH3Br) and methyl chloride (CH3Cl) play important roles in stratospheric ozone depletion, but their atmospheric budgets have large uncertainties. The analysis of stable isotope composition of methyl halides may provide useful independent information for further constraining their budgets. Here we report the first measurements of CH3Br and CH3Cl stable carbon isotope ratios e...
متن کاملTidal creek and salt marsh sediments in South Carolina coastal estuaries: I. Distribution of trace metals.
Twenty-eight tidal creeks were sampled along the South Carolina coast in the summer of 1995 to determine the levels of sediment trace metal contamination associated with different types and varying levels of human development in their watersheds. The particle size and total organic carbon (TOC) content of creek sediments in developed watersheds (i.e., industrial, urban, and suburban) were simil...
